Cooperative Research Grants


BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Unlike grant applications submitted from outside of Taiwan, applications from scholars affiliated with institutions in Taiwan must involve cooperation with one or more scholars from other countries. Applicants for cooperative research grants must be affiliated with a university or other academic institution. Funding for approved grants are normally distributed through the accounting organ of this institution.

The maximum duration of a Cooperative Research Grant is three years, and awards will not exceed NT$4,000,000.

Application materials must include:

  1. Project abstracts (in Chinese and English), project description, and budget.
  2. Curriculum vitae of the project director and all co-directors, including lists of publications over the last five years that are related to the proposed project.
  3. Endorsement letter from the applicant(s) and participating institution(s).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. The Foundationˇ¦s grants provide support for research on Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
  2. Applications should not exceed the limits for grant amounts and grant duration as stated in the program descriptions given above.
  3. Project directors who are currently receiving Foundation aid are ineligible to apply.
  4. The Foundation encourages applications with matching funds from other sources. Please inform the Foundation if applying for financial assistance from other organizations at the same time. If a project director receives aid from another source after the Foundation has already decided to support the project, please inform the Foundation within 7 days after being informed by the alternate funding organization.
  5. For projects that exceed one year, please provide a year-by-year breakdown of budget expenditures.
  6. When preparing the itemized budget, please use New Taiwan Dollars as the unit of currency.
  7. Funding is not available for university administrative expenses (including overhead or endowments) or the purchase of equipment.
  8. Foundation funds can only be transferred to and managed by institutional accounts. Endorsement letter from the applicant's institution must express the institution's willingness to comply with these procedures.
  9. Funds for Cooperative Research Grants may not be used to cover publication costs. Grantees anticipating the need for additional funding to cover such costs are welcome to apply for one of the Foundation's Publication Subsidies grants.
  10. The Foundation does not subsidize the salaries of domestic project directors. However, an annual honorarium not to exceed US$5,000 may be budgeted for foreign co-directors of Domestic Region Research Grants.
  11. For personnel, travel, fieldwork investigations, questionnaires, and other research expenses, please refer to the standards set by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  12. If there are other co-directors, please include their curriculum vitae, lists of relevant publications and letters of agreement along with the other materials required above.
  13. The Foundation reserves the right to post project abstracts and reports on its websites.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Applications must be submitted to our online application database. E-mail and paper applications will not be accepted. Applications may be submitted every year from August 1 (to start the application process, please click here).

DEADLINE

  1. The application period for Cooperative Research Grants is from August 1 to October 15. Applications after October 15 will not be accepted.
  2. A list of grant recipients will be announced in early June of the year following the October deadline.
  3. For applications which do not receive funding, the Foundation will inform the institutions and project directors within seven days after the results are made public. For applications that do receive support, the Foundation will inform the institutions and project directors as quickly as possible in order to arrange for contracts to be signed.
  4. The Foundation does not provide a written critique for unsuccessful applications.
