Dr. Georges Favraud Received a Special PhD Award from the French Association for Chinese Studies (AFEC)

    The Foundation is pleased to announce that Dr. Georges Favraud has been named recipient of a Special PhD Award from the Association Francaise d¡¦Etudes Chinoises (AFEC). The award, presented by ROC Representative in France Michel Ching-long Lu (§f¼yÀs) and Dr. Gladys Chicharro (President of the AFEC) at the College de France in Paris on December 6, 2014, was given in recognition of Dr. Favraud¡¦s contributions to the study of religious and social change in modern China.

    Dr. Favraud¡¦s thesis, completed under the guidance of Prof. Brigitte Baptandier at Paris West - Nanterre University, received a Doctoral Fellowship from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation (2010-2011). Entitled ¡§The Village Community of Litang and its Genealogical and Ritual Transmissions in the Building of Chinese Modernity¡¨, this interdisciplinary study aims at understanding the complex strategies of cultural survival adopted by several generations of Daoist masters and local leaders in the face of the profound changes that occurred in China during the modern era. The revised version of his thesis has been accepted for publication by the Maison d¡¦Archeologie et d¡¦Ethnologie (MAE) ¡V Paris West University Press.

    Dr. Favraud is currently undertaking a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, also funded by the Foundation, at CNRS¡¦ Center for Social Anthropology (LISST-CAS) and Toulouse Jean Jaures University. His new project analyzes biographical portraits of Daoist masters in order to assess contemporary transformations occurring at the famed Southern Sacred Peak (Nanyue) in eastern Hunan province.

    The Special PhD Award was inaugurated in 1998, and is jointly sponsored by the AFEC, the Bureau de Representation de Taipei en France, and the Fondation Sino-Francaise pour l¡¦Education et la Culture.
